Edwin L. Matthews Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Edwin L. Matthews, 84, of Wallins Corners, Amsterdam passed away after a long illness on Monday at the Wilkinson Health Care Facility. He was born in Gloversville on May 5,1937 and was the adopted son of Lewis and Lula La Rivers Matthews and attended local schools. Ed was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Matthews was employed as a custodian for the Gloversville Enlarged School District for twenty-five years and retired in 1996. After retiring, he returned to the district as a substitute because he really enjoyed his work. Ed enjoyed photography and videography. He also enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Adirondack Angels Dance Club at Smokey’s Den, formerly in Broadalbin. In fact, it was here that Ed was introduced to his beloved Rose Ann. He was a volunteer with the Big Brother program for several years and provided much love and guidance to his Little Brothers. Mr. Matthews was a member of the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Myra Baldwin and Mina Dianito; and his stepson, David Polgreen. Survivors include his wife, Rose Ann Winsman Matthews, whom he married on July 9, 1983; a sister, Gladys Mittler of Broadalbin; his daughter-in-law, Catherine Polgreen; a grandson, Nathaniel Polgreen; and his beloved poodle, Babe. In accordance with his wishes, cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Services will be held privately for the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mongomery SPCA or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, both in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M.
