Elfriede A. "Elfi" Cromling

Elfriede A. “Elfi” Cromling, 95, of Broadalbin, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 15, 2021. She was born on April 21, 1926, in Old Poppelau, Germany, a daughter of Theodor and Klara Albinski Synowski and moved to Berlin with her family at age one. Elfi began her dancing career at a ballet school in Berlin and danced until World War II began and theaters were forced to close. She witnessed a lot during the war. After the war ended, Elfi joined a dance company and toured Europe and the Near East. She met her first husband, George Cromling, when he was stationed in Turkey where she was performing. They were married in 1955 and he died in 1961. In 1968, Elfi married Albert Cromling and he died in 2004. Mrs. Cromling became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1957 and moved to Broadalbin in 1960. She was a dance teacher at Verlene’s Dance Studio in Broadalbin for many years and was affectionately known as Miss Elfi to her students. Mrs. Cromling was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Elfi lived a rich and interesting life and left her family with so many memories. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Rosemarie Wilke, and a brother, Walter Synowski. Survivors include two daughters, Georgia (Jeffrey) Baldwin and Sylvia (Richard) Snow, both of Broadalbin; five grandchildren, Andrea (Jason) Shapiro, Daniel (Nicole) McGee, Emily (Sebastian) Snow, Kyle (Kayla) Snow, and Cory (Amanda) French; and four great-grandchildren, who fondly called her Oma, Briana, Madison and Keegan McGee and Maxwell Shapiro. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Muriel (Alan) Salvione, two brothers-in-law, William and Robert Cromling, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 11am – 1 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown followed by a service at 1pm at the funeral home, with Pastor Joyce Royal, officiating. Burial will be in the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., in care of the funeral home.
