Eugenia “Jean” C. Des Jardins, 86, of Michael Circle, Trackside Homes, Johnstown died Wednesday September 21, 2016 at Wells Nursing Home. She was born in Fonda on January 16, 1930 a daughter of Joseph and Mary Healy Champagne and received her early education in Gloversville. Jean was a 1947 graduate of Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford, CT. She later graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing & Hospital in Yonkers, NY. Mrs. Des Jardins returned to Gloversville in 1968. She lived at Trackside Homes for the past ten years. Jean was very much involved with her children as they were growing up and supported many of their activities. She volunteered at school, in the community, and at her church and enjoyed every opportunity to help. Jean was known as a “second Mom” to the neighborhood, supplying endless amounts of love and advice. She had a great sense of humor. Jean loved to travel and enjoyed trips throughout the world, including Ireland, Germany, China, Japan, and Korea. Her greatest delight was spending time with her family and friends. She was a wonderful baker and was best known for her delicious desserts. Jean was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Gloversville and was a longtime member of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Rupert, Vivian McClary, and Eileen Nieuwboer; and three brothers, Francis, William, and Malcolm Champagne. Survivors include her husband, Leopold A. Des Jardins, whom she married on April 17, 1948; three sons, Alan J. Des Jardins of Vail, CO, Peter M. (Karen) Des Jardins of Greeneville, TN, and Gerald F. (Jennifer) Des Jardins of Mayfield; a daughter, Diane (Wesley) Jones of Tribes Hill; a sister, Mary Bottisti of Tribes Hill; eight grandchildren, Jerry and Scott Des Jardins, Eric (Kayla) Des Jardins, Marissa (Logan) Davis, Corey and Casey Quinn, and Christopher and Sydney Jones; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4 – 7 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 am at the Church of the Holy Spirit 149 South Main Street, Gloversville with Rev. Donald Czelusniak, officiating. Burial will be at the Gerald B. H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville at 1pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children’s research Hospital, in care of the funeral home. Jean’s family wishes to thank Missy Horning, RN and her magnificent staff at the Wells Nursing Home for the compassion and love that was provided to her.
