Harold J. Hemstreet, 76, of County Highway 126, Broadalbin, died Friday morning March 4, 2016, at home following an illness. He was born in Perth on August 10, 1939, a son of John and Hazel Kinnin Hemstreet and attended school in Perth. Mr. Hemstreet was a lifelong area resident. Harold was employed at Price Chopper in Amsterdam for forty two years retiring as a night manager. After retiring, he returned to the produce department. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Amsterdam. Harold enjoyed animals, including spoiling his dogs, feeding the bunnies, and watching the birds from his window. His greatest delight was spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Harriet Weil Hemstreet, whom he married on December 7, 1958; a daughter, Darlene Thompson of Broadalbin; two sons, John Hemstreet of Gloversville and Ricky (Francine) Hemstreet of Johnstown; two sisters, Shirley Davenpeck of Johnstown and his twin, Mildred Bramer of Amsterdam; three grandsons, Darryl Thompson, and Ricky and Andrew Hemstreet; two granddaughters, Jade Thompson and Dezerie Hinkle; a great-granddaughter, Aurora Davis; two great-grandsons, Andrew and Kyle Rothenburg; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. A calling hour will be held on Wednesday from 5 - 6 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown followed by a memorial service at 6 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Jerry Oliver, officiating. Final burial will take place in Perth Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or to the Montgomery County SPCA, both in care of the funeral home.
