Harriet G. Hemstreet, 75, of County Highway 126, Broadalbin, died Saturday morning October 1, 2016, at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, Amsterdam. She was born in Amsterdam on March 3, 1941, a daughter of William and Mary Beagle Weil, and was educated in Amsterdam. Harriet was a lifelong area resident. Harriet owned and operated Creative Styling Salon in Amsterdam for 35 years before retiring in 2010. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mayfield. Harriet was also a member of the Hairdressers Association of New York. She was married to Harold J. Hemstreet on December 7, 1958. He died March 4, 2016. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred Weil and Anthony Sheckton, and a sister, Helene Budinas. Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Thompson of Broadalbin; two sons, John Hemstreet of Broadalbin and Ricky (Francine) Hemstreet of Johnstown; two brothers, John Sheckton (Laurie) of Broadalbin and Walter Weil of Fultonville; three sisters, Lynn Frye (Jim) of Fonda, Sharon Fisher of Fultonville, and Lorraine Getman of Johnstown; five grandchildren, Darryl Thompson, Ricky and Andrew Hemstreet, Jade Thompson, and Dezerie Hinkle; three great-grandchildren, Aurora Davis, Andrew and Kyle Rothenburg; a great-great granddaughter, Kaylynn Rothenberg; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. A calling hour will be held on Thursday from 3 – 4 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown followed by a memorial service at 4pm at the funeral home with Rev. Jerry Oliver, officiating. Burial will follow in Perth Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Locks of Love, all in care of the funeral home.
