Helmut R. Maier Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Helmut R. Maier, 95 of Saratoga Springs, NY died Wednesday, April 20, 2022. He was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and came to the United States via Ellis Island. Helmut was the son of the late Albert and Maria Ludwig Maier and was a graduate of Middletown High School and Middletown Community College. He was a WWII Army veteran having served in the Pacific Theater from March 1945 until December 1946. Helmut married his wife of sixty nine years, Joan in Middletown, NY on April 18, 1953. They resided in Poughkeepsie, NY with their four children until moving to Edinburg, NY in 1990. Mr. Maier joined IBM in Poughkeepsie in 1953 and continued his employment there for thirty seven years, retiring as a development engineer in 1990. He was a small game hunter and fisherman most of his adult life. Helmut was also an active member of St. Martin de Porres Parish, Poughkeepsie and St. Francis of Assisi Church, Northville, and served as a Eucharistic Minister and folk group leader at both. He was a choir member at St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin, NY. While living in Poughkeepsie, he was involved with the Cursillo movement and a prison ministry in Fishkill, NY for many years. In 2016, Helmut and Joan moved to the Wesley Community where they shared an apartment. Survivors include his wife, Joan Frances Maier of Saratoga Springs, NY; four children, Donna (Raymond) Buzalsky of Fort Worth, Texas, Theresa (Christopher) Hudak of Oceanside, CA, Thomas (Kimberly) Maier of Danbury, CT, and James (Christine) Maier of Broadalbin, NY; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at St. Clements Church, Saratoga Springs, NY. Burial will be at 1pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. Johnstown, NY.
