Settimio "Sid" Della Ratta Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Settimio “Sid” Della Ratta, 88, of Benedict Loop, Broadalbin, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Saratoga Hospital. He was born at home in Rotterdam, NY on August 15, 1933, the son of Aristide and Josephine Criscuolo Della Ratta and was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School. Sid joined the US Navy after graduation and was a Korean War veteran. He served on the USS Oriskany and was honorably discharged in 1953. Sid later attended Siena College in Loudonville. Mr. Della Ratta’s parents purchased property in North Broadalbin in 1944 and opened a bar and grill, trailer park and a picnic area. Sid took over the bar business and ran it with his wife Betty until 1983 when their son Dean took it over. Mr. Della Ratta was a journeyman electrician at GE in Schenectady for many years, and a jack of all trades. There were very few subjects he did not know a great deal about. Sid was an avid reader of science fiction. He also enjoyed old musicals and movies. Sid was a ball room dance instructor and loved big band music. He loved living on the Sacandaga Lake and sat near the water almost every day. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post #337 in Broadalbin for sixty-eight years, as well as the former Kennyetto Masonic Lodge, the 40/8, and the Shriner’s. Sid considered himself a staunch Libertarian and was a member of the NRA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Philomena; and his son, Dean DellaRatta. Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Laforthun Della Ratta, his son, Aris (Kristy) Della Ratta; his daughter, Rachel Della Ratta; five grandchildren, Natasha, Alaina, Will, Meagan, and Christopher; a nephew, Jeff; a niece, Denise; and several cousins, including Dale Cristi, who was like a brother to Sid. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Inurnment will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022, at 2 pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4pm at the American Legion, Main Street, Broadalbin. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106, Johnstown, NY.
