Alexander Klymkow

Alexander Klymkow, age 96, of Broadalbin, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Mountain Valley Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 5, 1925, in Broadalbin, a son of Peter and Anastasia Duke Klymkow and was a lifelong village resident. Alex attended local schools and worked with his family on their farm. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during World War II. After his discharge, he met and soon married the former Elnora Fiacco of St. Johnsville. Mr. Klymkow was employed by General Electric in Schenectady for over forty years working in the Turbine Division. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. Alex was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed lending a hand to friends and family, repairing items for them. His assistance was always appreciated. Alex enjoyed spending time with his family whenever he could. He had many friends in Broadalbin and lived to be the distinguished oldest person there, an honor that was bestowed upon him by the late Victor Christopher. After the Great Sacandaga Lake was created, his love for the water was born. He spent many hours on the lake with his boat and on Sand Island, and even enjoyed Sunday spaghetti dinners there. He loved water skiing with two skiis, then one ski, and eventually, barefoot skiing. His love of the lake was passed on to his children and grandchildren who also enjoy the pleasure of boating and swimming. His adventurous spirit continued with snowmobiling with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Alex enjoyed riding his Honda motorcycle and a good party with laughter surrounding him. He and Elnora enjoyed wonderful trips to Hawaii, train travel throughout Europe, visiting many US states, and several cruises to the Caribbean. The last few summers were spent on Cape Cod with family. Alex was affectionately known as “The Silver Fox” and will certainly be missed by many. He was a member of the American Legion in Broadalbin for many years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of over sixty-five years, Elnora Klymkow, who died in 2015; a son-in-law, Jim Hayes; and seven siblings. Survivors include six children, Alexis Hayes, Constance (Paul) Dettenrieder, Elizabeth (Jack) Schero, Timothy (Mary Lynn) Klymkow, Kelly (Eric) Pistilli, and Lisa (Joseph) Masaitis. He was fortunate to have fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren that loved their “Grandpa/Poppa” and will miss him dearly; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 11am-1 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown followed by a funeral service at 1pm with Rev. Dr. Bonnie Orth, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice or American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. George Weis and Dr. Patrick Parisi for professional care given. Alex’s last days were spent at Nathan Littauer Hospital and Mountain Valley Hospice. He received excellent attentive care at both facilities. Additionally, he was fortunate to have wonderful care from his caretakers, Laurie, Victor, Darlene, Leanne, and Kathy.
