Allen J. Smith Jr.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Allen J. Smith, Jr., 65, who passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Albany Medical Center. He was born in Elmira, NY on November 3, 1960, a son of Loretta Hollenbeck and Allen J. Smith and lived in upstate New York since 1996. Throughout his life, Allen was known to be a jack of many trades and was also known for his strong work ethic and unwavering love for his family and friends. He built a life centered on hard work and helping others whenever he could. At the time of his death, Allen was employed at The Gund Company, formerly known as Power and Composite Technologies, in Amsterdam where he worked for 18 years. As a father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Allen made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. He found happiness in spending time with his grandchildren and creating lasting memories. Allen was predeceased by his mother, Loretta Kent and her longtime companion, Joseph Mack, his father and stepmother, Allen and Shirley Smith, a sister, Donna Bacon, and two brothers, Robert and David Smith. Survivors include a son, John Smith; four stepchildren, Elaina (Michael) Foster, Thomas (Tina) Gasiewski, Jacqueline Rothaupt, James Gasiewski, Sr.; four nieces, Brandy (Danny) VanNostrand, Angela (Jeffrey) Crubbrest, Sheila (Jimmy) Smith, Holly Smith; two nephews, Brandon and Jonathan Idoria; a brother-in-law, John Bacon; nine grandchildren, Sierra and Jonathan Smith, James Gasiewski, Jr., Haven and Addyson Gasiewski, Thomas Gasiewski, Jr., Dominic Dearce, and Lincoln and Kenneth Foster; his stepfather, Albert (Elizabeth) Kent; three stepsisters, Dawn Burgess, Cathy Kunzmann, and Karen Whitley; two stepbrothers, Ronald and Jeorge McCartney; and many extended family members and dear friends. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 4 – 6:30 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown, NY. A celebration of Allen’s life will be held at a later date and details will be announced. Though he will be deeply missed, Allen’s love, wisdom, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
