Christian Michael Rohrs

Christian Michael Rohrs was carried from this beautiful planet by the arms of the Lord on August 27th, 2023. Chris was born in Johnstown, NY in 1953, a son of Frederick and Josephine Zayicek Rohrs. It was during his years in the Johnstown School District that Christian exceled in basketball, football, golf, academics, kindness, and being downright handsome, all of which is evidenced by the numerous awards and recognition as “Best Looking” in his senior yearbook in 1971. He will forever be proud to be a Johnstown Sir Bill. He later attended Washington and Lee University and Fulton Montgomery Community College. In his early twenties, Chris acquired his PGA card as an Assistant Golf Pro: a position he held at Troy Country Club and, subsequently, Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course. He impressively had two career “hole-in-ones.” Chris was a talented artist and, more notably, musician. His love of Bluegrass music ran deep, and he honed his skills while in college in Virginia and played in several bands. Upon marrying his wife Kathie, they lived in Pumpkin Hollow, Wells, NY, where they endlessly enjoyed hiking, skiing, and camping. They eventually made their final home in Gloversville and were very active in supporting their children’s school and sports activities. Chris made a career of service to others, first as a Communications Instructor for the Lexington Center. This led him to being the NICF director for the Wells Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled upon the closure of the notable Willowbrook Facility. While living in Gloversville, NY, he served as a Letter Carrier for the Post Office. After retiring from this career, he joined Mountain Valley Hospice as Residence Manager/Coordinator of Volunteer Services. It was an exciting time as he was part of the innovative team establishing the first “in-patient” hospice house under the direction of his dear friend and beloved visionary nurse leader Nancy Dowd. Chris had a gentle and kind nature, which allowed him to leave this world, as he stated, with “no regrets”. He will always be remembered in his later years for his love of cooking, playing his mandolin, and golfing at his favorite course, Nick Stoner Municipal Golf Course. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Johnstown. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Patricia St. Peter, a niece Anne K. Bacon, and his best friends and brothers-in-law, Stephen Palumbo, Mason Warner, and Anthony “Crit” Christiano. Chris is survived by his beloved wife Kathie (Theurer) Rohrs, daughters Sarah (Tim) Chapp, Mackensie (Jacob) Greene, his son Christian (Tristan Turk) Rohrs; sister Suzanne Palumbo, brother Rick (Linda) Rohrs; granddaughter Abigail Chapp; grandsons Adam and Mason Greene, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and in-laws. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023, from 10am - until noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown, NY followed by a funeral service at noon at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams, officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the James A. Brennan Humane Society, in care of the funeral home.
