David A. Phillis

David A. Phillis, 70, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, with his family by his side. He was born in Amsterdam, NY on May 12, 1952, a son of Donald and Louise Filbeck Phillis and was a 1970 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. In 1971 Dave enlisted in the New York Air National Guard and in 1974 was employed as a personnel clerk for the Division of Military and Naval Affairs (DMNA). In August of 1980 he transferred to the New York Army National Guard to take a full-time active-duty position at the DMNA. He worked his way through various positions of Personnel Sergeant, Personnel Info Management Supervisor, Admin NCO, Chief Personnel Sergeant and achieved the rank of Sergeant Major in 2004. Dave dedicated thirty-four years of service to his military career and retired in 2005. Dave joined the Broadalbin Kennyetto Fire Company in 1992 and volunteered for over twenty-five years. During that time, he served as Lieutenant and Captain. He was a member of the American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin and a former member of the Amsterdam Elks Lodge 101. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with his wife, Carol. Together they traveled in their fifth wheel spending time in Myrtle Beach and Florida. Dave was also a member of the Sacandaga Boat Club and enjoyed many good friends and times there. In addition to his parents, Dave was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn “Kitty” Martin. Survivors include his wife, Carol Levandosky Phillis, whom he married on May 28, 1988; children, Christopher (Jessica) Phillis of Charlotte, NC, Kathryn “Katie” (Garth) Ploss of Porter Corners, Michael (Katie) Pawloski of Bradenton, FL, and Christopher Pawloski (Madeline Steele) of Broadalbin; a brother Donald (Joan) Phillis of Amsterdam; a sister, Deborah (David) Zayicek of Gloversville; six grandchildren, Brody Phillis, Blake Phillis, Robert Ploss, Lucy Ploss, Makayla Pawloski and Andrew Pawloski; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-6:30 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. Military honors will be rendered at 6:30 pm followed by a service by the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company. Memorial contributions may be made to Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company, in care of the funeral home.
