Gary E. O'Brien

Gary E. O’Brien, 65, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Fulton Center. He was born in Camden, NJ on August 22, 1958, a son of Thomas and Theresa Rekucki O’Brien and attended Camden County Vocational and Technical School where he studied electronics. Gary placed second in the Student Craftsman’s Fair in 1974 and was frequently on the honor roll. When the family moved to New York, he attended Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam and graduated in 1976. Following graduation, Gary attended Schenectady County Community College. Later, he attended Chauffeur’s Training School, Inc. and obtained a Class A CDL License. Gary enjoyed working on his Ford Mustangs. He had a passion for auto mechanics and shared his advice with family and friends on any mechanical issues. One of his favorite pastimes was listening to good ole rock & roll music. Gary was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Ballston Spa. Survivors include his mother, Theresa O’Brien; two brothers, Michael (Susan) O’Brien of Amsterdam and Thomas (Heather) O’Brien of Galway; three sisters, Susan (Douglas) Phillips of Mayfield, Kathy (Leland) Gayes of Galway, and Maureen (Ivica) Kunac of Clifton Park; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mohawk Valley Dialysis Center or to St. Mary’s Church, both in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106, Johnstown, NY 12095. Gary’s family extends many thanks to all those who work in the healthcare profession and do an impossible job every day with both compassion and care. A special thanks to the Mohawk Valley Dialysis Center and the Sentinel of Amsterdam. As a family, we cannot thank the Fulton Center enough for affording our brother the enormous gift of support, kindness, and love, in both his last year and then in the final few days of his life. Gary loved and appreciated everyone there. Also, a grateful and heartfelt thanks to Rev. Francis R. Vivacqua and the staff at St. Mary’s Church for their continued guidance and support.
