Harriett M. Van Allen Ballou

Harriett M. Van Allen Ballou, 86, of State Highway 30, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. She was born in Gloversville, NY on July 11, 1937, a daughter of the late Fred and Julia Lathrop Van Allen. On August 7, 1955 she married her true love, Frank H. Ballou, Sr. of 66 years. Sadly, Frank passed away on January 30, 2022. Mrs. Ballou was employed with the telephone company and worked as a nurses’ aide at Nathan Littauer Hospital. She left work to be a devoted loving mother raising her children. Later in life she worked in the cafeteria at Mayfield Central Elementary School, McDonald’s of Gloversville, and was a devoted loving caregiver for her mother Julia until her passing. Harriett enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, camping in the Adirondack Mountains, taking long rides with the family, sewing with her daughter, and watching her Yankees and Dallas Cowboys play ball. She enjoyed spending time playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, picnics with family and friends at home and at Wells campsite and going to class luncheons with her dear classmates. Harriett will be remembered for her amazing Sunday dinners with family and friends. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Ballou (Edward) Taylor; son, Frank (Lori) Ballou, Jr.; sister, Sylvia Van Allen (Bob) Pierce; nephew, William “Buck” VanVolkenburg; grandchildren, Josh Ballou, Frankie (John Damphire) Ballou, Sean (Kari) Rizzo, Rebecca (Michael) Hart, Gary Lee Warner, II, Matthew Warner, and Megumi Taylor; great-grandchildren, Raelynn, Willow, Blake, Charlotte, and Elaina. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 from 10am - 12pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 111 County Hwy 106, (Corner of Rt. 29 and Black St.) Johnstown, followed by a funeral service at 12 noon with Rev. Dr. Bonnie Orth, officiating. Burial will be in Mayfield Union Rural Cemetery. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice, Taylor Bornt, RN and Meghan Agerter, LPN and Aide for their incredible care and kindness; to Lara Zwijacz, PA for again giving care to our loved one; and a huge thank you to OFA Johnstown Shirley Luck Senior Center and the exceptional staff at the Good Times Day Program for their unconditional love and care and for giving Harriett back her social life again.
