John T. Ligon Jr.

John T. Ligon, Jr., 71, of Santos Drive, Gloversville, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Gloversville on March 11, 1954, the son of John and Ellen Pollard Ligon, John was a lifelong resident of the community he cherished. A 1972 graduate of Gloversville High School, he excelled as a standout athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. His passion for sports continued beyond high school, as he played football for the Glove City Colonials from 1974 to 1984, earning a place in the team’s Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball in Meco and was an enthusiastic member of several local bowling leagues. John dedicated many years of service to Niagara Mohawk in Gloversville before embarking on a career as a long-haul truck driver with Washburn’s Dairy and Finkle Distributors. Known for his warm personality and generous spirit, he was a familiar face in the community and treasured time spent with family and friends. He was a member of the People’s A.M.E. Zion Church in Gloversville. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Larry Ligon. He is survived by his son, Aaron T. Ligon (Shauna) and Aaron’s mother, Debra Ligon; two daughters, Alyson (Robert) VanBlarcom of Amsterdam and Alexis (Chris) White of Mayfield, along with their mother, Kimberly Mosher; two stepdaughters, Jamie Ormanian and Autumn Harper, and their mother, his former wife and forever soulmate, Charlene Ligon of Gloversville and ; six siblings, Gail Ligon of Hampton, VA, JoAnn (Ronald) Allen of Orlando, FL, Rebecca Ligon of Williamsburg, VA, Paul (Jennifer) Ligon of Gloversville, Neal (Marilyn) Ligon of Rochester, and Tina Cook of Rochester; nine beloved grandchildren; his aunt, Jeraldine Beekman; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his lifelong friend, Harry Robinson. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A funeral service will follow at 5 p.m., officiated by Pastor Robert Linder. Burial will take place in the spring at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the People’s A.M.E. Zion Church in Gloversville, in care of the funeral home.
