Sylvia C. Karp, 89, of Union Mills Road, Broadalbin died Tuesday December 22, 2015 at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam. She was born in Brooklyn on November 25, 1926, daughter of Theodore and Pauline Bilecka Carpluk. Sylvia was a graduate of New York City schools. She was married to Julius D. Karp on June 16, 1946. He died September 20, 1999. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Peter Karp, who died April 4, 1984. Mrs. Karp lived in Brooklyn before moving to Broadalbin in 1969 and was employed as an executive secretary for W.R. Grace & Co. in Manhattan for many years. Mrs. Karp later worked for New York State followed by employment with the Gloversville School District. At the same time, she was a reporter for the Leader Herald, reporting on local events in the Broadalbin area. After retirement, she was a substitute teaching assistant with HFM-BOCES. Mrs. Karp was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin and was also a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Amsterdam. She was a member of the former Catholic Daughters of the Americas and was a canter at church several years ago. She was a longtime member of the Mohawk Valley Chorus and the Singing Seniors. Sylvia was a member of the Broadalbin Senior Citizens. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Survivors include a son, Gregory J. (Cindy) Karp of Esperance; two grandchildren, Alyssa (William) Miranda of Allentown, PA and Matthew Karp of Green Island; a great-granddaughter, Harper Miranda; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 am at St. Joseph’s Church 7 North Street, Broadalbin with Rev. Jun Segura officiating. Burial will in St. Basil’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 – 5 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to BVAC, St. Joseph’s Church, or to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, in care of the funeral home.
