Sylvia Neahr, 90, of Southline Road, Galway died Thursday morning March 16, 2017 at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam. She was born in Pelham, MA on August 31, 1926 a daughter of Austin and Katherine Perry Thornton and moved to Houghton, NY. At age 10, Sylvia moved to the Town of Providence and was educated in the one-room schoolhouse in Hagadorn Mills. Mrs. Neahr was employed as a home health aide in the area. Her most important and beloved role was a wonderful wife and devoted mother to her seven children. Sylvia was a member of the Northampton United Methodist Church at Fish House. She was also a member of the Broadalbin Senior Citizens. Sylvia enjoyed dancing in her younger years. She loved crocheting, reading, ceramics, and playing the piano. Her greatest delight was spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Dale Thornton; and two sisters, Donna Ramsdell and Patti Duncan. Survivors include her loving husband, H. Richard Neahr, whom she married on March 28, 1943; three sons, Norman R. (Betty) Neahr, William M. (Debbie) Neahr, and David C. (Pam) Neahr, all of Galway; four daughters, Judith A. King of Ocala, FL, Gay Lynn (Ted) Meyers of Casper, WY, Felicia L. (Bill) Scheiber of Ontario, NY, and Terry S. (Ralph) Williams of Galway; a brother, Bernard Thornton of Broadalbin; three sisters, Alice Stewart of Gloversville, Marge Gunderson of Galway, and Jane Gregg of Tampa, FL; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 4:30 – 5:30 pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown followed by a funeral service at 5:30 pm with Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams, officiating. Cremation will be performed and final burial will be held in the spring at Barkersville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northampton United Methodist Church at Fish House, in care of the funeral home.
