Donald F. Wilson

Donald “Don” Wilson, a beloved member of the Broadalbin community, peacefully passed away on April 3, 2024. He was on the verge of celebrating his 80th birthday and the remarkable 57th anniversary of his union with MaryJane representing a lifetime illuminated by boundless love and unwavering companionship. Born in Schenectady, NY, on April 25, 1944, to Randall and Helen (White) Wilson, Don's life was marked by a profound dedication to family, faith, and service. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1961 and served honorably until August 1966, stationed aboard the USS Mispillon for two years in Japan. On April 15, 1967, Don married his beloved MaryJane (Harkness) Wilson, with whom he shared a life enriched by their three children. Don's professional journey spanned 32 years at General Electric, where he served as both a machinist and a leader, driven by his unwavering commitment to provide for his family. Throughout their lives, Don and Mary Jane cultivated a deep-rooted faith and strong values, which were evident in Don's active involvement in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin, The Broadalbin Ecumenical Food Pantry, the Community Garden, and The Fish House Community Center. However, Don's greatest source of joy was his family. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent together. Whether gathered for family dinners or watching his favorite show, Jeopardy, with his crossword puzzle nearby, Don's love for his family was unmistakable. He found comfort in his hobbies of woodworking and candle making, pouring his heart into his creations. Don actively participated in his children's lives, from Indian Guides and Indian Princesses to countless hours spent supporting them at soccer fields, lacrosse fields, dance recitals, tracks, and horseshows. His passion for travel, nurtured by hosting international students through Operation Friendship, brought him great joy and enriched his family's life experiences. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, and his Goddaughter, Markel Carras. He is survived by his loving wife, MaryJane Wilson; their children: Randy (Katie) Wilson, Amiee (Steven) Warfield, Matthew (Dena) Wilson; and his grandchildren; Isabelle Warfield, Campbell Wilson, Shannon Warfield, Johnathan Wilson, Owen Wilson, Troy Wilson, and Katilyn Wilson. He is also survived by his siblings, Paul (Joan) Wilson, Bob (Grace) Wilson, and Maggie (George) Trahan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 8th, 2024, from 10:00 am to noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106, Johnstown, NY, 12095, followed by a service at noon with Rev. Ken Applegate, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Ecumenical Food Pantry, or Fish House Community Center, both in care of the funeral home.
