Doreen L. Swingruber

Doreen L. Swingruber, 87, of Edinburgh Drive, East Schodack and formerly of Broadalbin, passed away on Sunday, July 26, at Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown. She was born in Rome, NY on June 6, 1939, a daughter of Francis and Florence Nelson Ryan and was a 1957 graduate of Westmoreland High School. Doreen moved to Broadalbin in 1966 and lived on the Sacandaga Lake and later in the village. She moved to Malta in 2010. After her husband’s death, Doreen moved to East Schodack where she lived with her daughter and son. Mrs. Swingruber was employed as the Director of Volunteer Services at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, for nearly 20 years and retired in 2002. Doreen enjoyed a good book or movie and shopping with her daughter. She loved sweets, especially chocolate, and sharing a good meal and a bottle of wine with family and friends. Her greatest love was for her family, and she and her husband delighted in supporting their children and grandchildren at every sporting and extracurricular event. She was married to Neil Swingruber on August 23, 1957, and they were together for over 63 years until his death on January 15, 2021. Survivors include two children, Neil S. Swingruber, Jr. and Jill (Kent) Swingruber-Sprotbery, all of East Schodack; a brother, Robert (Betty) Ryan of Alexandria Bay; nine grandchildren, Ryan (Ally) Swingruber, Anthony (Julia) Swingruber, Bradley (Laurie) Swingruber, Sean Swingruber, Neil “Trey” Swingruber, Samuel Swingruber, Sara (Evan) Bradshaw, and Emma and Nathan Sprotbery; six great-grandchildren, Ryan, Sydney, Antonio, Sophie, Mara, and Rosie; two nieces, Audra (Bob) Kearns and Vanessa (Timothy) Metzger; and sister-in-law, Judy (Fred) Bachman and their three daughters, Jennifer, Beth, and Kathy. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 11:30 am – 1pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A memorial service will follow at 1pm at the funeral home with Rev. Laurie Garramone, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, in care of the funeral home.
