Harlan J. "Duff" Handy Sr.

Harlan J. “Duff” Handy, Sr., 74, of County Highway 125, Gloversville, passed away Monday morning, March 9, 2026, at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born in Gloversville on April 11, 1951, a son of Harlan and Betty VanNostrand Handy and attended school in Mayfield. Duff was a lifelong area resident and lived in Bleecker since 1993. Mr. Handy worked as a sheet rocker for many years and later worked at Commonwealth Labs in Gloversville. His last employment was as a truck driver at Shepard Oil Co. in Johnstown, where he worked for 10 years. Duff eventually retired due to disability. He enjoyed quilting and showing horses at local fairs. Duff also enjoyed his goat farm that he operated for 15 years. Duff loved his family and friends and was always there for them in every way. Once you were a friend of Duff's you soon became family. He loved picnics and summertime barbecues and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved their visits and hearing about anything, whether it was a school project or working on a snowmobile, he was always interested in what they had to say. Some of his favorite times were when one of his grandchildren would stop in to visit. Whether it was Noah to tell him how his day went or Maddy bringing him cookies or cake. He loved them all and showed each one how much when they were near. He talked about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren endlessly and with such love. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Louis and William “Billy” Handy. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie K. Horning Handy, whom he married on October 13, 1990; two children, Michelle “Lacy” Halliday of Ballston Spa and Harlan “Jay” (Angela) Handy, Jr. of Bleecker; four brothers, Timothy Handy of St. Johnsville, Donald Handy, David Handy, and Aaron (Debbie) Handy, all of Mayfield; five grandchildren, Cynthia, Cristen (Denzel), Caitlin, Jason, and Noah; two great-granddaughters, Violet and Maddy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 16, 2025, from 3 – 5pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A memorial service will follow at 5 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., in care of the funeral home.
