Irene Bertha Blackwood Becker

Irene Bertha Blackwood Becker, 93, of Johnstown, and formerly of Fultonville, was reunited in death with her loved ones on Wednesday February 19, 2020. She was born in the Town of Florida on July 26, 1926 a daughter of Sherman and Lucy Anderson Blackwood and was a 1944 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Irene was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Becker was employed at Beech-Nut and worked in the Beechies department. Adventure began when Irene married Raymond in 1949. On their free time, they travelled all over the United States, missing only eight states. Irene kept all of state guide books, attraction pamphlets, menus, hotel bills, coasters, admissions tickets, matchbooks, and ashtrays from the places they visited. Irene will always be remembered for her huge zest for life. At age 70, she took the elevator up Whiteface Mountain and walked the path down. At 80 years young, she took a hot air balloon ride with her good friend Maxine Ambridge. Maxine took Irene grocery shopping, to lunch at KFC for the mashed potato bowl every Tuesday, and was a huge help caring for Irene. Max is the definition of a true friend. Other friendships Irene enjoyed were with Charlyne, Daisy, Birdie, and cousin Karen Hazzard. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Robert S. Blackwood; Buster, Artie, and Billy Anderson; and her spoiled, beloved cat, Pumpkin. Survivors include a brother, Everett Anderson; a sister-in-law Thora Blackwood; niece Laura (Sissy) Bellinger, nephew Eric Bellinger; Helen Anderson, Betty Young and daughter Suzanne Storms, Lori Jean Anthony Derrick (Jim), Jerry (Debbie) Anthony, Marilyn Anderson, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from noon-2 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Rt. 29 & Black St.), Johnstown. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial will be at the Maple Avenue Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Ayres Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff at Pineview Commons and Nathan Littauer Extended Care. Andrea brought Irene her favorite mac and cheese and Irene especially liked working with Brooke in PT. Her neighbors on North Chase Street, the Halls and Russos, were especially helpful to Irene, and David Nilsen helped maintain her property.
