Lucy Katherine Wilcox

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lucy Katherine Wilcox. She died on Friday, August 14, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. Lucy was born in Granville, New York, on June 15, 1927, the seventh child of Antoni and Aniela (Wieliczyk) Cechnicki, immigrants from Poland. She graduated from Granville High School in 1945. Following graduation, Lucy joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam, New York, with the intention of serving her country during World War II. Although the war ended before she completed her training, Lucy proudly graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1948 and went on to dedicate much of her life to caring for others. On August 19, 1950, Lucy married Eugene Lewis Wilcox. She stepped away from nursing for several years to stay home and raise their four young children. Once her youngest child began kindergarten, Lucy returned to St. Mary’s Hospital, first as a staff Registered Nurse and later as an instructor in Staff Development, the position she held until her retirement. Lucy was immensely proud of her Polish heritage and carried those traditions with her throughout her life. She continued to use and teach Polish words and phrases and lovingly shared Polish customs and foods with her family. Her Catholic faith was also at the center of her life. For many years, Lucy served as both a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Broadalbin. Prayer, Mass, and her church community brought her tremendous peace, comfort, and joy. Lucy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved sitting by Sacandaga Lake, taking walks, bowling, working on jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, word searches, and reading. She especially enjoyed her prayer books, newspapers, Reader’s Digest, nursing magazines, and mystery novels. She also loved watching the news, the New York Yankees, Perry Mason, Murder, She Wrote, and other lighthearted mystery programs. Some of Lucy’s happiest moments were spent surrounded by family. She loved Polish food, ice cream sundaes, and cheese and crackers, along with a celebratory rum and Coke on Sundays while working on the latest jigsaw puzzle with those she loved. Above all, she found her greatest joy in the company of her family, friends, and church community. Lucy was predeceased by her husband, Eugene in 1970; a granddaughter, Kristina Tomlinson in 2024; her parents, Antoni and Aniela Cechnicki; and her siblings: Katherine “Kasha” Symansky, John Cechnicki, Verna “Veronica” Cechnicki, Marisha Michaud, Jadwiga “Josephine” Thomas, Antosia “Antoinette”, and Constance “Connie” Pastor. Lucy is survived by her four children: Nadine (Stephen) Sleasman, Arlene (David) Tomlinson, Kevin (Dale) Wilcox, and Barbara (James, DC) Meehan, DC. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Elizabeth Tomlinson; David (Jennifer) Tomlinson; Sabrina (Sean) Smarup; Melissa (Ken) Mabie; Brian (Mallory) Sleasman; Denise (Michael) Mooney; James (Carrie) Meehan; Shannon (Bryant) Moorefield; Jennica (Rory) Hayes; Mackenzie Meehan, DC; Stephanie Wilcox (Adam Pulaski); Darek (Annika) Wilcox; Heath (Susan) Kane and Michael (Yuthi) Kane. Lucy was blessed with 33 great-grandchildren: Emilia and Jack Sleasman; Ani M. Mooney; Shawnna Price; Evan Tomlinson; Breanna, Marquis, Ellie May, Mina, and John Joseph Tomlinson(Emilee Horning); Jenna (Kristofer) Friers; Hannah (Chad) Torrone; Kiaira Tomlinson; Kaidyn Wilmot; Zach Moore; Shelby Moore; Nathanial, Isabella, and Olivia Smarup; Marcella and Kristofer Mabie; Ethan, Aubrey, Ava, Eliana, and Anthony Moorefield; Mina and Logan Hayes; Jaamay Meehan; Patrick and Julia Kane; and Archer and Kiaan Kane. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Verlene Wilcox Sanford Tierney, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. And, of course, Lucy is survived by her beloved 17-year-old cat, Furby, who brought her great companionship and comfort. Lucy’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice for the care, kindness, and compassion they provided, especially Megan, Jessica, Leah, Taylor, Missy, and R.W. Williams. We would also like to thank the medical community, especially Dr. Etzkorn and Dr. Tedesco. Your compassionate care brought Lucy reassurance, dignity, and peace. A special thank-you to Father Jun Segura for his guidance, prayers, visits, and friendship with Lucy. She deeply loved attending Mass, and your presence brought her tremendous peace and comfort. Lucy will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her gentle spirit, her unwavering faith, and the kind and loving words she had for everyone she met. She devoted her life to caring for others—as a nurse, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a friend, and a woman of deep faith. Above all, Lucy cherished her family. The love, strength, faith, traditions, and kindness she gave so freely will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind. Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 10am-noon at St. Joseph’s Church 7 North Street, Broadalbin. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon at church with Rev. Jun Segura, officiating. Burial will be in Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Broadalbin Kennyetto Fire Company, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Hospital Alumnae Association, or the Mental Health Association in Fulton and Montgomery Counties, in care of the funeral home Kochamy cię — We love you, Mom.
