Matthew Capano

Matthew Capano, 63, of Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Born in Gloversville on March 25, 1963, Matt was the son of Michael Sr. and Lucille Capano and a graduate of Mayfield High School's Class of 1981. He was especially proud to be the son of "Mike the Barber," whose barbershop served the Gloversville community for more than 70 years. A well-known and respected businessman, Matt co-owned and operated New York Lunch in Gloversville for 27 years with his wife Tammy. Matt also, owned and operated the Gloversville True Value. Alongside his twin brother, Mark, he was co-owner of the Glove Cities Colonials, a venture that reflected both his love for sports and his commitment to the community he cherished. Matt believed deeply in giving back to his hometown. He served as both a board member and president of the Gloversville Water Board, was an active member of the Gloversville Arts & Alliance, and proudly ran as a candidate for Mayor of Gloversville in 2025. His desire to serve was rooted in his genuine love for the city and the people who called it home. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Matt never met a stranger. He will be remembered for his contagious laugh and smile, sense of humor, quick wit, generous spirit, and ability to make everyone feel like a friend. His circle of friends was vast, a testament to the connections he built throughout his life. He was an avid music lover and a devoted sports fan, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Oakland Raiders, New York Knicks, and Syracuse Orange. Above all else, Matt's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose love for those closest to him was unwavering. He also shared a special bond with his faithful German Shepherd, Niko. In addition to his parents, Matt was predeceased by his sister, Luann Capano Marek. He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of nearly 37 years, Tammy Capano, whom he married on October 7, 1989; his daughters, Kristin (Peter) Capano-Havens of Mayfield and Trista (Jake) Morreale of Broadalbin; his brothers, Michael Jr. (Julie) Capano of Largo, Florida, and his twin brother, Mark (Elizabeth) Capano of Ballston Spa; his stepmother, Patricia Capano; his stepsisters, Stephanie Bakyta of Gloversville and Lori (Bruce) Reid of The Villages, Florida, ; his stepbrother, David Bakyta of Gloversville; his cherished grandchildren, Isabella, Talia, Angelo, and Anthony; his niece and nephews, Dominique, Alex, Travis, and Michael III; his lifelong best friends, Jim Chittenden and Pete Warner; and many other relatives and dear friends who will miss him deeply. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown. A prayer service will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Deacon Gregg Wilbur, officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to James A Brennan Memorial Humane Society of Fulton County, in care of the funeral home.
