Shirley J. Alkinburgh

Shirley J. Alkinburgh, 76, of County Highway 106, Johnstown passed away at home on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Gloversville on June 2, 1949, a daughter of Alex, Jr. and Florence Firth Aesch and was a 1967 graduate of Gloversville High School. Shirley was a lifelong area resident. Family was everything to Shirley. Her most cherished times were spent with family and friends. She was selfless in her life’s journey, making sure everyone in her circle was taken care of through love, guidance, empathy, and support. Shirley had several hobbies she enjoyed. She loved her house plants and bird feeders. She was happy to see the hummingbirds at their feeders along with the cardinals, canaries, and blue jays that would visit. She enjoyed camping trips with family and friends, playing Bingo, and going to the casino with her sister. She also enjoyed traveling to see her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and going to Cape Cod. Her memory will be held dear in the hearts of all who knew her. She was employed at St. Thomas Co., starting as a stitcher and later became operations manager. After the business relocated, Shirley attended FMCC and received a certificate in medical office management. She worked as an office manager for Dr. Glenn and later for St. Mary’s Healthcare in Gloversville for nearly 25 years, retiring 13 years ago. Mrs. Alkinburgh was a former member of the North Main Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her stepmother, Mary Aesch; a brother, James Aesch; and stepsisters, Elaine Rathbun and Debbie Skretkowicz. Survivors include her husband, Larry J. Alkinburgh, whom she married on May 18, 1968; two children, Scott (Sue) Alkinburgh of Greensboro, NC and Tracy Stevens (David McNeil) of Perth; two brothers, Robert Aesch and John (Gloria) Aesch, both of Gloversville; her sister, Elinor Mills of TX; step-siblings, Leo (Pam) Rathbun, of VA, Kevin (Kathy) Rathbun of AR, and Mark (Tina Pabis) Rathbun of St. Johnsville; seven grandchildren, Addam (Ashley) and Andrew (Shannon) Stevens, Kenzie and Natalie Alkinburgh; Ethan (Kelley) Miller, and Andrew and Mathew McNeil; three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Zoey, and Willow; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 16, 2026, from 10am – noon at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A service will follow at noon with, Dr. Kevin Cope, presiding. Burial will follow at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, in care of the funeral home.
