Thomas E. Holt Sr.

Thomas E. Holt, Sr., 77, of Ridge Road, Broadalbin, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, December 27, 2024. He was born in Amsterdam, NY on January 24, 1947, a son of Melvin and Frances Canfield Holt and lived in Broadalbin his whole life. Tom was a 1965 graduate of Broadalbin High School. Tom was employed for 25 years with Local #40, Heat & Frost Insulators. While an insulator, Tom was a hobby farmer. In 1983, Tom, with Debbie by his side pursued his dream and went on to establish Holt’s Dairy Farm in Broadalbin. This was Tom’s passion in life, and he would work from sunup to sundown. Farming was his way of life. Tom’s family was his world. For those that know him, knew how much his family meant to him. More than anything he enjoyed their company and spending time with them. He especially loved his grandchildren. Tom enjoyed hunting, going to Fonda Speedway, watching NASCAR, watching his favorite oldie, Gunsmoke and giving his beloved dog Molly endless treats. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Melvin and Ronald Holt, and a sister, Lynda Yost. Survivors include his wife, Deborah Warren Holt, whom he married on November 25, 1967; five children, Melissa (Lorne) Brown, Trina Sowle, Thomas Holt, Jr. (Donna), Marcie Holt (Dave), and Eric Holt (Sharon); a brother, Frederick “Rick” (Jill) Holt; nine grandchildren, Brandon (Stephanie) Brown, Lyndsie (Nate) Adams, Ashlie Bond, Jordyn Sowle, Kaitlyn Holt, Emilee Holt, Elijah (Christine) Porter, Morgan Holt and Caleb Holt; three great-grandchildren, Reed Achzet, and Beau and Audrey Brown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Monday from noon- 2pm at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 & Black Street), Johnstown. A funeral service will follow at 2pm with Linda Eastman, presiding. Following the funeral services the family invites you to gather at Al’s Roadhouse Midline Road, Amsterdam (formerly Snowed Inn) to honor and share your memories. Burial will take place in the spring at Union Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Cornell University Cooperative Extension-Fulton & Montgomery Counties - 4-H or to the National FFA Foundation, both in care of the funeral home. FINAL BURIAL UPDATE: Final burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Union Mills Cemetery, Broadalbin.
